Counselling & Guidance Overview

The aim of the guidance programme is to ‘ensure that all students have access to appropriate guidance’. In so doing the guidance service in Luttrellstown Community College assists students in their personal and social, educational and career development while in school.

The key personnel involved in delivering this service include:

  • Principal
  • Deputy Principal
  • Guidance Counsellors
  • Caomhnóirí
  • Class Tutors

To be effective this must be done in a clearly defined manner to allow the students to develop through adolescence and to learn to cope with all the facets of their personal development.

Guidance and Counselling at Luttrellstown Community College aims to facilitate positive development of every student while at the same time respecting their individuality in a sensitive manner.

The adolescent child’s identity is formed by their interaction with the world around them. This is made up of their school life and their home life. Through the help of personal and group counselling, students are encouraged to reflect on this interaction and what values and principles emerge from it to offer guidance in their daily lives

Personal and Social Guidance Counselling

The main aim of personal guidance counselling is to assist students in their growth process by exploring a range of coping strategies so that they can better deal with the problems they face both now and in the future in order that they can become fully functioning members of society.

Personal Guidance counselling incorporates a wide range of concerns including addressing specific problems, coping with a crisis, improving relationships and self-esteem, dealing with conflicts, exploring thoughts and feelings and developing coping strategies.

Educational Guidance

Educational guidance is an integral part of the Guidance Programme in Luttrellstown Community College.

Educational guidance topics include:

  • Transition from primary to post-primary
  • Study skills
  • Development of motivation and commitment skills
  • Writing skills
  • Subject choice
  • Exam techniques
  • Academic support
  • Career Guidance

The career guidance programme in Luttrellstown Community College aims to equip students with the skills and information to make informed decisions on future career plans. The transition from Second Level Education to Further Educational Training or employment can be made relatively smooth when students receive a thorough grounding in career planning. Successful career planning must include setting goals and objectives for future careers and options.

Students are provided with a comprehensive knowledge of the vocational, educational and career options which are available to them. The vocation preparation provided will ensure that parents and students are equally informed of progression routes and lifelong learning opportunities.

Guidance counsellors work closely with students to organise work experience in Transition Year, which is an integral part of vocational preparation.

Vocational preparation for Senior Cycle Students also involves guest speakers from the various colleges and industry coming into the school to offer assistance to our students in their vocational discovery.

Vocational guidance is an ongoing process that starts with the student’s entry into Luttrellstown Community College and has the potential to continue into adulthood. This involves:
